Scientific and research activities

Scientific and research activities at the Department of Mathematics are mainly based on the following scientific projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia:

  • Dragan Jukić, "Nonlinear parameter estimation problems in mathematical models (235-2352818-1034)"
  • Ninoslav Truhar, "Passive control of mechanical models (235-2352818-1042)"
  • Mirta Benšić, "Statistical aspects of estimation problem in mathematical models (235-2352818-1039)"

which gather all researchers in the field of mathematics from the University of Osijek. Prior to this, all researchers in the field of mathematics from the University of Osijek were gathered around the following two projects: R. Scitovski: Parameter identification problems in mathematical models, and M. Benšić: Statistical aspects of parameter estimators in mathematical models.

In the last five years about 30 papers were published in internationally recognised scientific journals (mostly cited in Current Contents and Scientific Citation Index), plus the same number of papers published in international conference proceedings. In 1993 Dr. Hrvoje Kraljević initiated foundation of the Mathematical Colloquium which was first organised as an activity of the Osijek branch of the Croatian Mathematical Society. It is held regularly on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and now it is completely organised by the Department of Mathematics, University of Osijek. Lectures delivered at the Mathematical Colloquium are primarily intended for professors and students of the J.J.Strossmayer University of Osijek, as well as for high-school teachers and people from other fields of activity. Lecturers of the scientific colloquia are scientists employed at Croatian universities, but very often these are foreign scientists as well. Scientific colloquia usually give original scientific papers, present parts of Master’s theses or doctoral dissertations, or overviews of recent trends in various fields of mathematics and its applications. Lectures at the educational colloquia usually present topics referring to innovations in teaching mathematics or lecturer’s own ideas and approaches to teaching mathematics, but also some interesting topics referring to the history of mathematics or famous mathematicians. The institution of the Mathematical Colloquium is of extremely mobilising importance to mathematics and related sciences at the University of Osijek. More details referring to the Mathematical Colloquium can be seen at http://www.mathos.hr/kolokvij.

Department of Mathematics co-organised the following scientific conferences: 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th International Conference on Operational Research. Teaching staff of the Department of Mathematics participated actively in organisation of several international scientific conferences: International Conference on Operational Research (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002), Conference on Applied Mathematics (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005), Croatian Mathematical Congress (2000, 2004), PrimMath[2001, 2003] – see the aforementioned web site. It has to be pointed out that the Department of Mathematics, University of Osijek, has been entrusted with the organisation of the next IV Croatian Mathematical Congress, which will be held in 2008.

Professors and assistants of the Department of Mathematics have established numerous contacts with universities and other scientific institutions abroad. The co-operation has been realised through the exchange of the teaching staff, scientific advanced training of researchers, researches referring to master’s theses or doctoral dissertations, etc. Let us mention that a recently signed co-operation agreement with the Universität des Saarlandes (Saarbrücken, Germany). Three of our assistants (Irena Galić, Domagoj Matijević and Dorotea Dudaš) and one assistant employed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering who is also our part-time associate (Alfonzo Baumgartner) have started to attend the doctoral study programme at the International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science at the aforementioned university. Our junior researcher Andrea Krajina was granted a scholarship for the doctoral degree study programme at the University of Tilburg, the Netherlands. There exists good co-operation with the International Conference and Research Center for Computer Science, Schloss Dagstuhl, Universität Trier, Universität Passau (Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik, Passau), Technische Universität München, Technische Universität Graz, Universität Klagenfurt, Fernuniversität Hagen.

By fostering and expanding present co-operation activities the quality of scientific-research and teaching activities will be ensured, and young associates will be given a chance to continue with their scientific and professional development abroad.

At the International Students' Olympiad in Tehran 2005 our students won the fourth place.

Students are also part of the international co-operation through the students' association IAESTE.
